I woke up on June 13, 2024, with a riff already lodged in my skull. Not because I had been playing air guitar in my sleep, but because Epic Games had promised that Fortnite's v30.10 update would drag Metallica into Battle Royale, Festival, LEGO Fortnite, and Rocket Racing. Two years later, in 2026, that morning still feels like a thunderclap trapped in amber.

First came the waiting. Servers were set to go offline at 1AM PT / 4AM ET / 9AM BST on Thursday, June 13. Every platform was affected: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. Epic said Fortnite would be offline for a few hours, and we expected servers back by roughly 3AM PT / 6AM ET / 11AM BST. I refreshed the official Fortnite Status account like a roadie tuning a guitar before a stadium show.

Platform Downtime Start Expected Return
All platforms 1AM PT / 4AM ET / 9AM BST ~3AM PT / 6AM ET / 11AM BST

When the servers finally blinked back to life, the patch notes read like a setlist carved into a roller coaster. Metallica: Fuel. Fire. Fury. was coming June 22, an immersive music experience built by Magnopus. It featured six fan-favorite songs, with gameplay that matched the intensity. The Master of Puppets was waiting.

The experience lived in Fortnite's Discover screen for thirty minutes each showtime, so latecomers could still catch the full show. I grabbed three friends, because a party of up to four felt like the only correct way to headbang in unison.

Fortnite Festival Season 4 turned James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert into Icons, but they were not just there to perform. They were there to battle. The new PvP Battle Stage threw sixteen players into a musical free-for-all, and only one would emerge victorious. The Battle Stage, Jam Stage, and Main Stage all fed into the Season 4 Festival Pass. The free reward track and Premium Reward Track offered in-game rewards, including James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo Outfits. Buying the Premium Reward Track unlocked the Lars Ulrich Outfit. LEGO Styles let the band roam outside Festival, too. Metallica Quests ran until July 21, 2024 at 4 AM ET, unlocking James's ESP Snakebyte Guitar and Robert's Warwick M72 Bass.

Battle Royale became a pinball machine made of amplifiers. Ride the Lightning guitars spawned on the island and in Chests. You could use one to create a lightning arc in the sky, letting squadmates ride it, then crash down like a guitar string stretched between two skyscrapers. Mid-match, the floating Metallica Loot Island rifted from a hole in the sky. Atop it was a stage inspired by the M72 World Tour, with holographic James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert. Rock out, capture the POI, and loot spilled out, including Ride the Lightning. Battle Royale Metallica Quests offered an Emote and Loading Screen until July 2, 2024 at 9 AM ET.

Then came the Metallica Cup on June 18. Squads Fill, Battle Royale, and the top point-earning players in each region could earn the Ringer Emote before it hit the Shop. Competitors had up to ten matches in a three-hour window. Victory Royale gave 62 points, second gave 52, third gave 45, and each elimination added 1 point. Players needed Two-Factor Authentication, Account Level 15 or above, and Cabined Accounts were not eligible.

Rocket Racing got Thrash Mountain, a volcanic track that felt like a cymbal crash inside a cathedral of noise. Instrumental monuments lined the route, a stretch of road mimicked a fretboard, and Metallica's 'Fuel' played in the background. It was a Novice track unlocked at Bronze I. Rocket Racing Metallica Quests rewarded the Backfire Car Body, Puppetmaster Backfire Decal, and Chasing Light Wheels. Thrash Mountain and those quests stayed until August 16, 2024 at 9 AM ET.

The Shop was a puppet theater. Starting with v30.10 on June 13, the Puppet Master Outfits for Lars, James, Kirk, and Robert arrived, each with flame-emitting eyes and a blazing skull breastplate. They had LEGO Styles. The 'One' Jam Track was in the Festival Pass Premium Reward Track, but the Shop also sold 'Enter Sandman,' 'Fuel,' 'Master of Puppets,' 'Ride the Lightning,' 'The Unforgiven,' and 'Wherever I May Roam.' More Metallica Jam Tracks followed over the weeks, all available until August 16, 2024.

Burn rubber, too. The Metallica Jäger 619 Bundle was in the Shop until June 26, 2024. It included the Jäger 619 Car Body with thirteen paint colors, plus Circuit Pro, Euphoria, Kraken, Storm Warning, Stripes, The Summit, and Puppetmaster decals. Everything was eligible for cross-game ownership with Rocket League. If you already owned the Jäger 619 Car Body, you automatically received the Puppetmaster Decal, and future decals for owned Car Bodies would also be granted starting in v30.10.

Content creators in the Support-A-Creator program could host VOD content from Metallica: Fuel. Fire. Fury. on YouTube and monetize it for seven days, from June 22 at 2 PM ET to June 29 at 2 PM ET. They needed to link YouTube and SAC accounts, upload as Unlisted or Public, and avoid Private uploads. If a claim appeared, they were told not to dispute it during processing.

Looking back from 2026, that update was a masterclass in making a collaboration feel like an event instead of an advertisement. It was loud, theatrical, and generous across every mode. I still hear the opening riff of 'Fuel' whenever I drop into a certain volcanic track. I still remember riding a lightning arc with my squad, laughing as we crashed into a fight like a meteor with a distortion pedal. Fortnite's Metallica takeover did not just add skins. It turned the whole island into a stage, and for a few weeks, we were all part of the show.
